University of Scranton
The University of Scranton holds the largest and most wide-ranging portion of the Kaminski Handwriting Collection. The material is housed in the McHugh Family Special Collections at the Weinberg Memorial Library, under the direction of Special Collections Librarian Michael Knies — who has built one of the most significant repositories for the study of American penmanship anywhere in the country.
Scranton is already home to major penmanship collections in their own right: the Zaner-Bloser Company Archives (the company, now part of Highlights for Children, founded the Zanerian Art College in Columbus, Ohio and trained generations of penmanship teachers); the P.W. Costello and Family Art Collection; the Newton C. Brewster Penmanship Collection; the Fanny Howe Collection; and others. Together these collections make Scranton one of the premier locations for digitized American penmanship in the country.
The Kaminski donation was described in Pen World magazine (vol. 36.5) by Nicholas Adams, Professor Emeritus of Architectural History at Vassar College: “A recent donation by David Kaminski considerably expands the breadth and usefulness of Scranton’s collection. While books and manuals provide models for the handwriting that many of us struggled to emulate, Kaminski has been developing a collection of handwriting examples to construct a history of American handwriting as it was practiced. The ability to compare models and practice will be a special strength of the Scranton archive.”
In autumn 2023, Scranton mounted the exhibition Learning to Write: American Penmanship Manuals from the David Kaminski and Zaner-Bloser Collections, 1791–1980 in the Weinberg Memorial Library Heritage Room. The exhibit ran in conjunction with a summer conference at which attendees worked directly with original penmanship samples. The collection’s contact at Scranton is Michael Knies.
