Columbia University

Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library, located on the sixth floor of Butler Library, holds one of the great collections of rare books and manuscripts in the United States. Columbia’s penmanship holdings are deep and well-documented — largely the gifts of George Arthur Plimpton — and researchers working in the history of American handwriting before 1905 will find exceptional depth there. Searching OCLC or CLIO for penmanship materials through roughly 1930 surfaces the scale of what Columbia holds.

The Kaminski material sent to Columbia was chosen to address a specific gap: the library’s collection is thin after approximately 1905–07. Kaminski items at Columbia are therefore weighted toward the early twentieth century and later. Columbia also received items related to manuscript print — the style of upright, unjoined letterforms taught in American schools beginning in the 1920s — because both Marjorie Wise, who introduced manuscript writing to American classrooms, and Melvil Dewey were affiliated with the university. The collection’s contact at Columbia is Jane Siegel at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Kaminski items cataloged at Columbia can be searched directly in CLIO.
